About me/ Exhibitions

Natalie Head’s practice originates in photography and remains grounded in the photographic image as both material and point of departure. Working from her own photographs of natural and familiar landscapes as well as found vintage photographs, she is interested in how memory mediates experience—how images function not as fixed records, but as sites of condensation, omission, and reconstruction.

Seeking to extend the limits of photography, Natalie incorporates AI as a generative tool rather than a surrogate author. AI-generated elements are introduced into the photographic field to destabilize the image, allowing scenes to be dismantled and reassembled. The resulting works function as large-scale digital collages, occupying a space between the natural and the constructed, the grounded and the speculative.

Materially, the work unfolds across varied mediums and scales. Images are often presented in differing sizes to mirror contemporary modes of visual consumption shaped by algorithmic systems—where emphasis, repetition, and fragmentation guide perception. As a self-taught artist, Head centers experimentation and accessibility, framing them as conditions that allow conceptual rigor and public engagement to coexist.

Natalie has been a resident member of Verge Center for the Arts for 15 years and has exhibited work in Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland, and Tokyo, Japan. Her work invites viewers of all ages to engage, reflect, and connect, creating spaces that are at once contemplative, critical, and open-ended.
